Hui Taumata Trust – An Eye To The Future

The Hui Taumata event, MATA “An eye to the future” was a huge success. 300 people packed out the Symposia and Marketplace and close to 200 attended the evening event. We received excellent feedback from the symposia attendees about the topics and the very high quality of speakers. Each symposium ran from 10.00am through until 4.45pm and was made up of a range of speaker presentations with commentary and feedback from the floor throughout the day and work-shop sessions in the afternoon. The three topics covered were:
  • Employment
  • Business (small to medium sized business and enterprise); and
  • Water

A report back on each of the symposium outcomes was provided by each of the chairs in the Soundings Theatre at the evening event, these outcomes included:

Employment

Attracted a strong focus on education and training, particularly discussion around the “9 day fortnight’ that came out of the Prime Minister’s jobs summit, but in particular there were a range of initiatives that the Hui Taumata Trust was asked to investigate in the short term to ensure momentum from the event.
  • The Hui Taumata Trust should further explore:
    • Developing a range of options and choices for education and training for Maori youth from a very low level and through the training processes (some of this work has taken place already through the Workforce Development Trust)
    • Facilitate the development of partnerships, creating opportunities to work together and network.
    • Develop a plan (with significant experience around the Board table) that identifies where we could move to in 5-10 years time, and as part of that plan, develop key training requirements and upskilling for workforce development.
    • Develop partnership models, as well as encourage organisations to enter into an MOU or basic agreement to commit to implementing a range of initiatives within their own organisations. (The work that has already taken place on the Wellington Regional Strategy could build into this)
    • Develop a review and assessment process that would be implemented to ensure that organisations deliver on commitments.
  • The Hui Taumata Trust demonstrated that it has the ability to bring people together, so the Hui Taumata should establish a wider employment stakeholder forum to be held either quarterly, or half yearly to report back on initiatives and link ideas.

Business (Small to medium sized business and enterprise)

A theme that ran through the business symposium was the requirement for leadership and direction, particularly in light of the recession and the international credit crunch. The Hui Taumata holds the experience and expertise to provide this leadership.

SKILLS AND MEASUREMENTS – DESIGNING WHAT WE SEE AS SUCCESS

  • The Hui Taumata will further explore:
    • Designing economic models that would support 4 pillars of well being (economic, environmental, spiritual and cultural).
    • Considering the direction for Maori business and identifying the opportunities in this recession.

COLLABORATION– HOW DO WE COLLABORATE TO INNOVATE

  • Hui Taumata will investigate how they can:
    • Connect entrepreneurs with Maori collectives to share ideas and infuse some of that Maori entrepreneurial thinking into organisational planning.
    • Identify and showcase the success that has come from collaboration to assist in identifying the reasons for collaborating and ways to align collaborative effort to outcomes.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES - STAYING AT HOME, BUT CONTRIBUTING TO THE WORLD

  • The Hui Taumata will play a lead role in:
    • Showcasing ideas and initiatives that are taking place so that these can be used to inspire others.
    • Developing a Maori business directory so that we can connect easily with one another.
    • Providing a Maori voice into the engagement process when it comes to decision making around ICT spending.

MENTORING AND NETWORKING

  • The Hui Taumata will encourage:
    • Getting highly visible Maori leaders to actively advocate for Maori mentoring.
    • Cultivating Maori culture as the “X” factor through mentoring relationships
    • Developing a mentor programme that has a specific focus on developing leadership in young men.

Water - Freshwater is a fundamental resource that is essential to life.

  • The Hui Taumata will assist to facilitate: Consideration of whether the markets that have been implemented overseas are appropriate for establishment here in New Zealand.
    • A call to all Maori leaders to ensure that the position between Maori and the Crown is settled over the next two years.
    • Finding a way to improve resourcing so that all iwi can participate in the decision making process.
    • Establishing a fund that could be used to bring in international experts in indigenous rights. Eg : Canada so that other international perspectives can be drawn upon.
    • Identifying the current process in place.
    • Supporting the Pukawa forum and the Iwi leaders’ engagement to support the collaborative approach with Iwi leaders and facilitate a process to come out with an agreed Maori position on National water policy and Maori rights and interests.
    • Developing education programmes that can be easily accessed – every New Zealander needs to understand the issue of scarcity. Without that we will be in real trouble.
    • A process of dialogue with stakeholders to develop proposals to the Government on a new water regime.

Overview

Clearly there were a range of ideas and initiatives that were put forward in each of the Symposia and there is now an opportunity to develop a work programme that is heavily influenced by these findings in each of the three key areas. From each of the symposia it was clear that there is a pivotal role for the Hui Taumata in facilitating and implementing these initiatives, in particular it was noted that:

  • The Hui Taumata was seen as the obvious body to bring together stakeholder groups on key topics of importance to Maori Economic Development
  • The Hui Taumata is a truly representative group with the ability to advocate for a Maori position on key topics
  • There is a key role for the Hui Taumata to assume in developing education programmes or promoting and increasing access across all three topics. Ensuring that these can be accessed and provided broadly across the country will be crucial to the country’s ongoing growth.
  • The Hui Taumata have and should continue to showcase models of success and approaches that challenge and have worked. Successes need to be communicated and presented to wider networks.
  • The Hui Taumata provides the ideal access point for information to be developed, summarized, and widely shared throughout wider networks.
