Dear Participants
MAORI INITIATIVES IN A CHANGING WORLD
Today is about crystallising our collective wisdom and drawing on our strength to find solutions to the challenges we are all facing in these uncertain financial and economic times.
While we are powerless to halt the global recession washing over us, we are not powerless in our response and preparedness.
Lessons from our recent past suggest Maori will be called upon to bear a heavy load, with many of our people facing employment and other financial challenges. Today is about how with the help of our partners we can work together to shoulder that load and prepare ourselves for a better tomorrow.
Maori are in a prime position to make a significant contribution to the economic future of our nation. The growth of Maori assets, the initiatives of Maori entrepreneurs in the past decade, coupled with the return of assets through the Treaty settlement process, places Maori in a strong position to make a significant investment in the creation of jobs and the growth of our nation.
Maori are prepared and ready to invest in jobs and to play a leading role in finding the solutions necessary to secure a positive future for our nation.
Let us be well prepared so that when this recession ebbs, we are well positioned and ready to seize future opportunities as they arise.
The Hui Taumata Trust, as a unique partnership of Maori leadership, business, unions and government, is well placed to take a leadership role, guide the debate and help formulate the solutions necessary to steer our nation through the difficult and challenging times ahead.
Today we will consider three key issues to be faced by our people through these challenging times:
We have the benefit of a range of experts in each of these areas that have given up their time to share their thoughts with us all.
During our evening event we will bring together our collective wisdom and provide you with evidence to support our belief that Maori are in a prime position to make a significant contribution to the economic future of our nation. We will consider key economic challenges that we face, and we will attempt to put forward some solutions to these issues.
I therefore welcome you to join with the Hui Taumata Trust on this exciting day. I encourage you to contribute to our symposia during the day and participate in our evening event.
Nga mihi nui,
Sir Paul Reeves
Chair, Hui Taumata Trust
