Community support
The 2005 Hui identified leadership and governance as key areas for Maori communities to develop. The successful operation of Maori community groups, land management entities and businesses rests largely on the success of their leadership and governance structures and management processes.
Leadership goals
The key leadership goals set at the Hui Taumata 2005 are to:
• form a roundtable of Maori businesses that will focus on 2025 and hold strong collective beliefs
• develop and implement succession plans focused on tomorrow’s leaders for implementation by today’s leaders
• ensure that appropriate remuneration and support is offered to tomorrow’s leaders in their training and development and – if necessary – to attract them home and retain them
• develop economic leadership tools that are kaupapa Maori based, including in the areas of business management, communication, mentoring and networking
• recognise and nurture leadership potential in everyone, in particular the leadership potential of all our rangatahi
• institute and resource a leadership component in vocational education pathways
• secure resources to establish a Maori leadership institute and leadership incubators
• research the generic set of traits and attributes that underpin leadership, and research leadership in a Maori context
• create balanced leaders with multi-value skills that are primarily founded on cultural values but broad enough to contribute to improvements in education and employment, the environment and wealth creation.
