About Entrepreneurship

Hui Taumata 2005 identified entrepreneurship as a key plank for advancing Maori economic development. To grow a generation of entrepreneurs, we need to encourage enterprise skills that are essentially also life skills.

Enterprise Skills
The enterprise and life skills required for entrepreneurship include the ability to:

• Absorb and analyse information.
• Communicate your goals clearly.
• Act on decisions.
• See opportunities to add value.
• Be confident.

Other requirements for entrepreneurship
The hui discussed the need for resilience, self-belief and integrity in business. There is also the need for environments that allow people to learn from their mistakes, to learn from others’ successes and to share their own triumphs.

Indigenisation of entrepreneurship
Participants at the hui wanted to encourage the indigenisation of entrepreneurship from a young age, starting with whanau. They were also enthusiastic about investment in enterprise education, coaching, mentoring and networking initiatives to promote entrepreneurship among Maori.
