About  Maori asset management 

Developing collectively owned Maori assets isn’t easy at present. There are many challenges and diversions - tribal politics, emotional attachments to land, parochial decision making, and conservative, risk-averse governance.

 

Modern business models

We believe there is a need to identify and develop modern financial and accounting tools that will support intergenerational asset management. Maori governance needs to be continually looking to equip the next generation. Asset consolidation is necessary as huge efficiency gains can be achieved by jointly managing assets.

 

Utilisation and productivity of Maori land

The utilisation and productivity of Maori land is a challenging area. Since the passing of Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993 many issues around the management of Maori land have been eased. But a lot of frustration and confusion remains for entities wanting to manage Maori land more effectively.

 

While there are examples of effective land management, there are many more instances where Maori land is not being used to its full potential.

 

Lack of surveying and management structures

Only 6% of New Zealand land is identified as Maori land, and of that only 57% has been surveyed. Furthermore, less than 30% of groups that manage Maori land have established management structures in place.

 

These are significant barriers to effective land utilisation. The overall effect is costing Maori land owners, and the New Zealand economy
